Design Challenges and Other Events

It’s a busy season for aging-related design challenges, forums, exhibitions, and conferences. Recent and upcoming events include:

August 2013: OpenIDEO announced the winners of their Design Challenge, sponsored by the Mayo Clinic. Running from June-August, the theme was “How might we all maintain wellbeing and thrive as we age?” The 6 winning proposals included creating Wellness Teams (students plus senior volunteers), resources for pop-up Wellness Lounges, and Caregiver Wellness Toolkits.

Sept 24, 2013: the Stanford Center on Longevity and Aging 2.0 launched their Design Challenge, “encouraging undergraduate and graduate students to find solutions that help older adults affected by cognitive impairments to live independently as long as possible.” Initial submissions are due Dec 2, 2013, finalists will be announced in Jan 2014, and winners will be announced April 2014. Finalists will be able to work with mentors from different schools at Stanford; the top 3 winners will earn cash prizes.

Sept 27, 2013: PAMF (Palo Alto Medical Foundation) sponsored the Aging and Community Redefined – A Vision for the Future forum. The forum explored ways in which health care systems and communities can collaborate to support older adults in the community. Bruce Chernof, CEO of the SCAN Foundation and Chair of the Federal Commission on Long-Term Care, spoke of helping “older, valued, community and family members be fully connected.” Dr. Paul Tang, Director of PAMF’s Druker Center for Health Systems Innovation, said it was “important opportunity to sustain the social and mental well-being of seniors.”

In 2012, the Druker Center sponsored a Developer Challenge and Accelerator Project, “inviting the technical community to partner with it to develop new ways to help seniors age successfully.” Also in 2012, the Druker Center launched linkAges, a community-based time bank network (not to be confused with Link-Age).

Oct 15-17, 2013: AARP Innovation@50+ is a sponsor of the DEMO Fall 2013 event, a “launchpad for emerging technology and trends,” in Santa Clara, CA. AARP’s Life@50+ National Event and Expo was held in Las Vegas in July.

Nov 14-15, 2013: The LeadingAge organizations of California, Oregon, and Washington present AgeTech West, featuring “tech-enabled aging and home care services…to reach a new standard of person-centered care,” in San Jose, CA.
